about

bill pfaff:

unconformities (©2010 asilowerks productions) was composed in response to my experiences as an Artist-in-Residence in the Petrified Forest National Park in 2009. The work is scored for five electric basses and is performed by Drew Waters. The electric bass ensemble allowed me to convey the depth of time as embodied in the fantastic geology of the park—including the vividly colored petrified wood. In a more human dimension, the landscape has been home to travelers for centuries. They survived in the stark openness of the arid grasslands and left a record of their presence in many ancient petroglyphs. This kind of distance in time and space is conveyed by the weight of the electric bass ensemble. The multi-media version here features my music and photographs with collaborative contributions by Drew Waters (bass, engineer, mastering) and Steve Twardzik (digital media consultant).

Silent geology of ancient rivers
And the sound of wind and thunderstorms.
Dark skies far beyond the Milky Way.

Sunrises reach to color Archaic and Pueblo IV etchings—
Illuminating the sacred time, concentration
And expression of the earliest artists breathing in this place.

Listen. Layers of sound emerge.
Woven into the design of a musical work:
Time, moments of place and voices of the park.
Made with care, like the details in a wilderness petroglyph.

Pfaff, Residency Statement, 2009

Etched in Sacred Time was completed in fulfillment of the requirements of the Petrified Forest National Park Artist-In-Residence Program. I extend my appreciation to the staff and volunteers of the park for a remarkable experience.

The work was composed with the production collaboration in mind. Drew Waters suggested that I "make the piece from the place itself," and helped me design a mobile audio system to capture the sounds of the park. The found sounds form the basis of the percussion heard in the piece.

Dr. Waters performed multiple electric bass parts, recorded, mixed and mastered the project. His compositional insights, sound design and musicianship are an integral contribution to the realization.
